Organic and mantric—the bass flows in a half-hypnotic pulse.”

Background

The hectic environment of modern schools increasingly challenges children’s well-being. The numerous transitions in a school child’s daily routine can often lead to feelings of unpredictability and insecurity. Calmful Transitions explores whether it is possible to promote calm and focus in young students during these transitions by playing deeply resonant, low-intensity music composed specifically for this purpose. The project, which started as an artistic research project at The Royal Academy of Music in Denmark, also investigates whether an accompanying animated visual component can enhance this effect, aiming to demonstrate that such musical pauses can foster improved well-being and learning.

Method

The music, a unique blend of two 10-minute pieces, was composed by Westergaard specifically for this project. These pieces, characterized by a melodic, slow tempo and extended form, create a deeply resonant and organic sound. The music is performed primarily using an electric bass with a loop pedal and a baroque flute, played by Torben Westergaard and Japanese baroque specialist Toshiyuki Shibata, respectively.

Format

The project’s two long music pieces – one of which will be animated – will be easily accessible on streaming platforms (see release timetable). The animated version will also be available on this site during the fall. Both main pieces will be released in extended and radio edit versions, ensuring everyone can enjoy the benefits of these musical pauses.

For All Ages

Although the music was initially composed for schoolchildren, I hope adults like you will also enjoy taking a brief pause amidst the many tasks that fill our hectic lives.
